'White Horse' Performance Art Powered By The Blockchain

27 Jul 2022

What this re-release from 2001 conveys in the times we are living

Marina Abramovic is a Serbian conceptual/performance artist synonymous with dark representations of life, pain, danger, and all that is extremely weird, abnormal and unusual. In other words, works of pure evil.

The timing of this release and global staging is rather interesting in the times that we are living.

She is now entering the world of performance art on blockchain by dropping her NFT (Non-Fungible Tokens) for ‘The Heroes’ a video work that was initially released in 2001.

What should catch the attention is the image of a white horse and a white flag. Perhaps there could be no relation whatsoever to Revelation 6:2 where a white horse is given a bow and a crown and goes to conquer in the end times.

Though this work of art was released in 2001 as a video - that was originally dedicated to her father who fought in World War II- releasing it now especially in these uncertain times does herald something that we need to think about. Don't be sidetracked with the format of its release and the excitement of blockchain performance art but stay focussed on the interpretational aspects of the work and connect the dots.

She explained the thinking that led her to release this earlier work in this new format:

Right now, we need hardcore images and the image of The Hero (2001) on the horse is a very strong image. (Because) right now, we are really facing the third world nuclear war. I mean, we are.
That’s a really huge danger where we are now. So this is the moment where we revisit this white horse, this white flag. We have beautiful land in front of us and it’s the hero who can save us. Only the hero can save us! Somebody who sacrifices everything.
Right now we need heroes. Less artists but more heroes...The heroes. The ones who sacrifice everything. The ones who bring the new light to illuminate this world.

This work will be on display everyday on screens in public settings around the world in important cities for three months. So those people who are walking on pavements busy in their inner worlds would probably make nothing of these white horse with a woman holding a white flag in an open field and might assume it is signalling peace and comfort but don't be deceived.

In Revelation 6:2 when the first seal is opened, a white horse is released and the one seated on the horse was given a bow and crown and he went out conquering and to conquer.

In an article in The Art Newspaper, she tries to explain the interpretational aspects of this work in the new setting.

It has always been very important to create strong images. I can't predict what each person looking at The Hero will take away. As Marcel Duchamp said, the public has to complete the work. Why this heroic posture, with the horse that dominates the landscape? Why is this landscape there? All of this is unanswered, I want the public to complete the work with their own interpretation, to see in it their own ideas of heroism

This work of art can be interpreted in so many ways to those in the world but the Word of God predicting the end times is our required interpretation.
